I am a mother. A wife. An avid reader. And now an author.
I love paranormal romance and dark romance, but to be honest, I love almost every kind of romance there is. Some of my favorite authors include Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter, J.R. Ward, Larissa Ione. I also enjoy books by Kat Martin and Karen Hawkins. My tastes span the breadth of romance. It made me wonder if I could ever write a book half as good as some of my favorite authors.
After years of thinking about writing a book, I finally did it! Unbalanced is the first in my paranormal romance series. I struggled for a while. I had the basic idea for my book. I knew my characters. I knew my world. It was the writing that I struggled with.
When I first started, I didn’t know about the term “pantser”. I had initially started my outline, but it was difficult for me. I would write down vague things, like “demon attack”. No details, no clear way forward. My characters were constantly going the opposite direction I had planned. I finally decided to quit trying to plan my books.
Don’t get me wrong, I write down notes. I like writing out different ideas for scenes, but I don’t try to assign them a permanent place in the story. If it happens organically, then great. The only time I follow what I’ve written is when it comes to the hard rules of the world I created. I tried to come up with a realistic, but complex, magic system. I had to write down the laws I made, so I wouldn’t create plot holes later. I set my left and right limits, and as long as I stayed between them, then everything was fair game.
Sometimes when I write, I have no idea what I’m doing, where the story is going. But I trust my characters. I made them. I know them. I know that when my story starts getting away from what I thought I wanted to write, it’s because my characters are guiding me. They know how they will act, how they would react. They know how they want their own stories to go.
Currently, book one: Unbalanced, is with an editor. I have already written book two. I am currently on the self-editing stage, trying to find as many mistakes as I can before I send it off to an editor. Book three is almost complete. I have the basic premise for books 4-6, but I'm still working on getting them sorted in my head.
